The Flora Modiste Sewing Patterns: An Introduction
So I get this all the time, from women of all walks of life: "I have been wanting to learn how to sew for years." And "how do you even learn how to sew your own clothes?" But my absolute favorite is: "I don't even know where to start." Well girl, I got you.
If you have been wanting to learn how to sew for years.. Just start. Literally just beginning is one of the hardest parts of learning any new skill. Just take one baby step TODAY, and you will only continue to learn and move forward. But "how do you learn how to sew your own clothes?" By doing it.
As I have said in previous posts--The only way to learn how to sew is to practice it. By doing different projects and working with different materials, you learn.
But the almighty is my fav:
As long as you have a sewing machine (or have access to one) there are really only 3 components you need to get started:
- A basic sewing kit: This includes all of the tools needed for most sewing projects. (And we just so happen to have a post ALL about how to build your own sewing kit. Make sure to check it out & grab your complete guide below!)
- Fabric & trims: Of course, a sewing project needs fabric--But not all sewing projects need trims. (i.e. A zipper, buttons, etc.) It really just depends on the project! (Not sure which fabric to pick for a project? Make sure to check out our comprehensive fabric guide here!)
- A sewing pattern: Sewing patterns are basically the blueprint of any sewing project. They are what you follow when cutting out a design, and are perhaps the most important part of any project! (We just so happen to have some pretty amazing (current & coming soon!) sewing patterns & DIY sewing project kits here at The Flora Modiste.

So why are TFM sewing patterns so unique?
For a few reasons, really. Each of the sewing patterns here at The Flora Modiste produce (at least!) 2-3 completely unique garments. How do you create the individual designs?
Why, by simply taping them together of course! Yep--That's it. Knowledge you learned in Pre-K: How to use Scotch tape. No closing a dart here, manually shortening a hem there. Nope. Just tape.
I feel like so many sewing patterns out there are just way more complicated than they need to be. And, as a result, it makes people give up on sewing before they've really even tried because it's just so overwhelming. Not here my friends.
With our very first sewing pattern, the Dany, you are able to create a sheath dress or a matching two piece outfit. Two completely different garments.. Yet they are created using the same exact sewing pattern. How? By taping the patterns for the crop top & the high waisted skirt together, a sheath dress is created. Simple.
And for our brand new, soon-to-be-released sewing pattern in collaboration with the vegan & sustainable line Vesta--Two completely unique high waisted wrap skirts can be created simply by substituting pocket patterns. Easy.
Here at The Flora Modiste we want to make learning how to sew your own clothes easier--Not harder.

Learn how to sew your own clothes with our DIY sewing kits
How else do we make learning how to sew your own clothes even easier? By offering DIY sewing kits for our sewing patterns, of course! Our DIY kits include absolutely everything you need to make up one of our sewing patterns.
That includes fabric, thread, and any additional trims that my be needed. (Because I will never, ever understand why other DIY kits do not include thread--Literally drives me crazy!) ALSO. Yet another reason I hear about why ladies haven't learned how to sew yet is because they just don't have the time.. Well girl, this one's for you.
Because I don't have the time either. While I know a lot of creatives absolutely love the process of going to the fabric store and enjoy picking out absolutely everything needed for a sewing project.. I am really not a fan.
(Or reading one of my 10,000 books I have to get through.) And not to mention--When starting to learn a new skill, most of the time you don't even know what to pick out. Even to this day, there are projects where I pick out the wrong fabric. Which then results in me never wearing the project that I spend countless hours on.
But rest assured.. Every single fabric in every single one of our DIY kits has been tested with the corresponding sewing pattern that it is available in. Many, many times.
So. When purchasing one of our DIY sewing kits, you can rest easy knowing that you have found the perfect fabric for your TFM sewing pattern. (Not to mention the hours you will save wandering aimlessly around the fabric store!)

What are the benefits of sewing with The Flora Modiste?
I could go on and on and on about why I think you should pick TFM sewing patterns for your next project. (Although I may be a little bias.) So I will just settle with a few reasons:
- Our sewing patterns are simple, modern designs that you will want (and be proud!) to wear.
- While the projects are fairly easy to sew, there are still a ton of lessons to be learned.
- I hand draft all of our sewing patterns from my home in San Diego, and test them out many, many times before sending them off to my grader & printer.
- All of the fabrics & materials in the DIY kits have been tested by yours truly. (Again, often many, many times.)
- And finally, if you ever get stuck and need additional instruction on how to sew a construction detail.. Chances are we have covered how to sew it here on the blog.
While our very first sewing pattern, the Dany, was a completely in house project.. I am so very excited about our second sewing pattern in collaboration with the beautiful, sustainable clothing company Vesta.
The designer at Vesta, Kendall, designed the wrap skirt and sent me a rough sketch of what she was wanting. I then drafted up the sewing pattern, test fitted it, and sampled it. (Not only in muslin--But in the fabric that the DIY sewing kit for the skirt will be available in.) While I will be offering the skirt in both the sewing pattern & the DIY kit, Vesta will be offering the ready to wear skirt over on her website!
So whether you're the girl that loves this new design and is ready to sew it up, or you're the girl that just wants to BUY it and support a beautiful small business.. We've got you covered. Stay tuned loves--This is an exciting new direction for TFM sewing patterns!
