A Breakdown Of The Jupiter DIY Sewing Project Kit

The Jupiter DIY Sewing Project Kit Breakdown Featured Image

And alas, The Flora Modiste's second pattern & DIY sewing project kit is here! If you have been following the blog the last few months, then you know that this newest sewing pattern, the Jupiter Wrap Skirt, has been a collab with the brand Vesta.

Not only do I love the design of the Jupiter (I mean, how could you not) but working on this collab with Vesta has been so very special. I have known the brand's founder, Kendall, since our days of working together in NYC.

About 5 years ago now we both tired of the grind that is living & working in New York, and left for the west coast. Kendall started her clothing line and I started TFM!

While I love drafting my own sewing pattern designs, it's a pretty nice break doing it for another company. They make the overall decisions (say adios to decision fatigue) and you just figure out how to make it work.

It's almost like a puzzle--And I love a good puzzle.

And while I love sewing.. I really love pattern drafting. So with this collab, not only was I able to work with a close girlfriend, but I was also able to draft a pattern that is going to be featured in Vesta's ready to wear (& made to order) line!

Which is a first for me, and pre-tty exciting. I have been drafting my own patterns for years now, but there is no feeling like when you create something for an actual customer.

So. Not only is the Jupiter Wrap Skirt available in a sewing pattern & as a DIY sewing project kit here on TFM.. But the ready to wear version is also going to be a available on Vesta's site in their signature fabrics!

If looking to get your Jupiter on the creative way, keep reading to see just what a TFM DIY sewing project kit is all about.

What's in the Jupiter DIY sewing project kit?

What's In The Jupiter DIY Sewing Project Kit?

Girl, everything. All that is needed to create the Jupiter Wrap Skirt (except for the sewing machine of course) is included in this DIY sewing project kit. But let's break it down:

  • The Jupiter Sewing Pattern: Available in sizes XS-XL. There are a few variations that can be chosen when cutting & sewing the Jupiter: Practical inseam side pockets or giant patch pockets? Midi length or maxi hem?
  • Sewing Pattern Envelope: A thick, quality envelope that safely stores the sewing pattern & instruction manual.
  • Step-By-Step Instruction Manual: A 20 page full color booklet that walks you through how to sew up the Jupiter Wrap Skirt.
  • Fabric: 2 1/2 Yards of a beautiful mid-weight hemp & organic cotton blend that is seriously perfect for this design. (And so, so easy to work with!)
  • Fusible Interfacing: 1/4 Yard of interfacing to add some additional support to the skirt's waistband. (I literally cannot stand it when DIY kits don't include the interfacing.. It's needed, so why wouldn't it be included?)
  • Thread: 1 Spool of white thread is also included. Because again--You absolutely need thread to sew up the project, so why in the world would it not be included?
  • Clothing Tag: 1 Custom label is included, to sew into the waistband of the Jupiter.

I have included quite literally everything you need to sew up the Jupiter Wrap Skirt with this DIY sewing project kit. It drives me a bit mad when DIY kits don't include EVERYTHING--Most DIY kits on the market like to not add in thread or interfacing. #WHY

Because the point of buying a DIY kit is to NOT have to go to the fabric store.. But if you still have to go to grab interfacing or thread, then what's the point?

The Jupiter DIY sewing project kit: The sewing pattern

The Jupiter DIY Sewing Project Kit: Printed Sewing Pattern

As with our previous pattern, the Dany, the Jupiter sewing pattern was printed by my amaaaazing printer based in the UK. I will be forever thankful that I found this company--Not only do they print my sewing patterns, but they also print the pattern envelopes and the instruction manual booklet.

I actually went and visited Netprinter when I was on holiday in Europe earlier this Fall. And I discovered that they are just as wonderful in person!

(If interested in printing your own sewing patterns with Netprinter, make sure to check out this post I put together on working with them. Because I don't believe finding a sewing pattern printer needs to be hard!)

But anyways. The Jupiter sewing pattern.

Because this design is a bit of a longer one, the pattern is printed on 4 A0 sheets. The sewing pattern includes both pocket options and hem lengths, as well as all of the interfacing pattern pieces.

The beauty of this printed pattern is that you don't need to cut any of the pattern pieces on a fold. Or on doubled up fabric. Literally just cut out each of the pieces needed for your version of the Jupiter (in your size!) then pin and cut the fabric. Seriously, so so easy.

The pattern itself is available in sizes XS-XL and follows traditional US sizing. And perhaps the best part? The sewing pattern is printed on a beautifully weighted white paper. No irritatingly delicate brown tissue paper here!

The Jupiter DIY sewing project kit: The sewing pattern envelope

The Jupiter DIY Sewing Project Kit: Sewing Pattern Envelope

The sewing pattern envelope for the Jupiter is the same envelope used for the Dany. It is a perfectly weighted, thick envelope that will safely store the Jupiter sewing pattern for years and years to come.

And the envelope isn't just for safe storage--It also has tons of useful information on it. Like the skirt's sizing, the different design options, and all of the fabric/trims needed for the design.

So if you are the girl that wants to go shopping at the fabric store.. All you need to do is glance at the back of the envelope to see what needs to be picked up at the shop.

Simple, thank you very much.

I am all about making sewing easy here at The Flora Modiste. That includes creating an envelope that will safely store your sewing pattern without ripping after the first use.

But also one that makes it so easy to read at a glance what is needed for a project. Because it's hard enough just finding the time to sew. No one has the time to deal with taping up ripped envelopes or searching for a materials shopping list.

The Jupiter DIY sewing project kit: The instruction manual

The Jupiter DIY Sewing Project Kit: Instruction Manual

I have mentioned this in previous posts.. But yet another aspect of traditional sewing patterns that would drive me absolutely nuts are the instruction manuals.

All of the big box pattern companies love creating manuals that use cryptic black & white technical illustrations that really aren't that technical at all. I think the easiest (and most effective) way to teach sewing is by SHOWING it.

With real life, full color photos.

Which is exactly how the instruction manual in our DIY sewing project kit is created. The instruction manual for the Jupiter is a full color, 20 page booklet. It walks through how to arrange the marker for both pocket styles of the Jupiter, as well as how to sew each style. Step. By. Step. In plain, conversational English.

When I was writing the instruction manual for the Jupiter, I literally recorded myself speaking as I sewed up the samples. And that's how I put together the manual.. Because I was doing the process myself. Again, with the making things easier.

The Jupiter DIY sewing project kit: The fabric

The Jupiter DIY Sewing Project Kit: Fabric & Fusible Interfacing

I absolutely loooove the fabric for this particular DIY sewing project kit. It is a woven hemp/organic cotton blend with tiny little black & white pinpricks that create the beautiful, uniquely textured look of the fabric.

When I was creating the DIY kit for the Dany, I wrote a post all about WHY organic fabrics matter here at TFM. And I am holding to that standard with this new DIY sewing project kit as well.

The hemp/organic cotton blend is produced by a local California company based in San Francisco. And it is just gorgeous--The fabric is a perfect mid-weight for this design.

And it is just so, so easy to work with.

Because I recommend using a woven fabric when sewing up the Jupiter, you need fusible interfacing to give some additional support to the waistband. (And patch pockets, if choosing that design option!)

So of course.. I have included interfacing in our DIY kits. As I mentioned above, it drives me kind of insane when interfacing isn't included with a DIY kit.. So I was not about to not include it with ours.

Not much fusible is needed, but it does make a huge difference to the finished project when pressed & sewn in. And I want your TFM sewing projects to succeed as much as absolutely possible!

The Jupiter DIY sewing project kit: The trims

The Jupiter DIY Sewing Project Kit: Thread & Custom Label Every single TFM DIY sewing project kit actually includes the trims needed for a project. For the Jupiter, that means including both the thread and a custom clothing tag.

Because you literally cannot sew up a project without thread.. And is a garment really complete if it doesn't have a label? (Serious game changer ladies!)

As I have mentioned previously--It absolutely blows my mind that most of the DIY kits on the market don't include thread. I kind of understand it with the clothing labels--A label isn't 100% necessary.

But thread? THREAD?! It's absolutely essential.

Which is why we include it. All of our thread comes from the Utah based company Superior Threads.

The thread provided in the DIY kits is an all purpose thread that works for all different types of projects, and we are proud to work with it here at The Flora Modiste.

The clothing labels included in a DIY sewing project kit are custom made and state: "Made By The Flora Modiste & Me". Because this is a team effort!

The Jupiter pattern & DIY sewing project kit is available in the shop now--So make sure to grab one today! Because once this pattern & DIY kit are gone, they're gone.

Not only am I very proud of the sewing patterns we create here at The Flora Modiste.. But I am also very proud of every single DIY sewing project kit as well.

I have tested each pattern and every single DIY kit (myself!) many, many times.

A pattern does not go to print until I have sewn at least 3 samples using the pattern perfectly. I order fabric for a DIY kit only when I have sewn up every design option in that fabric to ensure it works perfectly for EVERY design--Not just one or the other.

As much as possible, I work with other small businesses.

I print all of our sewing patterns & printed materials with a small business in the UK. The fabric I chose is from a company based in San Francisco, the thread from a small business in Utah, the clothing labels from a business in Philadelphia.

All of our shipping materials are recycled & recyclable.

And of course--The company that I worked with on this collab, Vesta, is a small, female owned & operated business like myself. With this sewing pattern & DIY sewing project kit, you are not just supporting one small business--But many!
